Exponets and Scientific Notation

doing exponats is really easy. first you would look at your base. (the bigger number or the first number) Then you would look at your exponent. (the smaller number that comes second) say your base is 7 and your exponet is 4. you would look at your exponet and multiply your base as many times as your exponent is. so your answer would be 2,401.

ex. 4 to the 6th power
4 x 4 x 4 x 4= 256

VOCABULARY

BASE: the number that your multiplying (the larger number)
EXPONENT: the number that tells you how many times to multiply.(the smaller number)

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

scientific notation is very easy also. when you have a decimal that is very large for example maybe simalir to this .00000000000876. you would have to move the decimal point to the first "real" number, witch in this case is the 8. so the decimal point is in between the 8 and the 7 so now your decimal looks like this, 8.76. now you would have to multiply that by an exponent. the base will always be 10. Now your exponent is the number of how many times you moved your decimal point over. so your problem that you have to find the answer to is now
8.76 x 10 to the the 12th power witch = 87,600,000.
